Abortion Services

Whether you are visiting us for a consultation, test, or surgery, you will appreciate the extra steps that we have taken to provide you with privacy and comfort.

The vacuum aspiration procedure is a one-day outpatient procedure. It is used to terminate pregnancy in the first trimester, typically under 13 weeks from the start of your first menstrual cycle. You may choose to be awake or asleep during the procedure. Misoprostol is given 15 mins. to 1 hour prior to your procedure, depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy. Misoprostol is given to soften the cervix, making it easier to dilate so that the procedure is easier and safer to do. Side effects that it may cause are nausea, vomiting, chills, diarrhea, cramping, or vaginal bleeding.

Abortion Pill (Mifeprex) & Methotrexate Termination includes:

  • Urine Pregnancy Test

  • Blood Test for Rh Determination

  • Medical History Evaluation and Birth Control Options

  • Examination and Sonogram

  • Consultation with Doctor regarding Mifeprex or Methotrexate

  • Follow-up for Post Abortion and Birth Control, 3-4 weeks later

Safe and Effective

IV Sedation & Local Anesthesia

Our doctors – obstetrician-gynecologists, anesthesiologists, and nurse anesthetist, are board-certified and are experienced in performing abortions. Time in the office is between 3-4 hours.

IV Sedation & Local Anesthesia (Local) for Termination includes:

  • Urine Pregnancy Test
  • Blood Test for Rh Determination
  • Post-Operative Evaluation and Birth Control Options
  • Examination and Sonogram
  • Local Anesthesia is a numbing of cervix but not uterus
  • IV Sedation is administered by Anesthetist/Anesthesiologist
  • Surgery is done by vacuum aspiration
  • First Stage Recovery monitored by Anesthetist/Anesthesiologist and Medical Staff
  • Second Stage Recovery monitored by Medical Staff
  • Follow-up for Post Surgery and Birth Control, 3-4 weeks afterwards

If you choose IV sedation, you will be asleep during the procedure, having both the medical doctor and the anesthesiologist present. This means that you will not feel anything at all and have no awareness during the procedure. You will be breathing on your own while we monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels. Before the doctor begins your procedure, the anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist will give you anesthesia by IV. The time that it will take you to fall asleep is less than one minute and the procedure takes typically less than 5-10 minutes. You will need to spend 45 minutes in the recovery room for observation, rest, and discharge instructions. Before you are allowed to leave the recovery room, our staff will confirm that your ride is in the lobby to drive you home. Under no circumstances will you be allowed to leave the facility if you do not have a ride home. You MUST have someone to pick you up, you may NOT drive yourself home. Before coming in to the clinic, you can NOT eat, drink, smoke, or chew anything 6 hours prior to your appointment. If you do not have an empty stomach on the day of your procedure, your appointment will be rescheduled.

If you choose local anesthesia, you will be fully awake during the abortion procedure. You will be given an Ibuprofen 800 mg tablet prior to the procedure. To begin the procedure, the doctor will put an instrument called a speculum into your vagina. The doctor will inject Lidocaine (a numbing agent) into and around your cervix area. The next step is to insert a round, smooth, dilation rod to gentle open your cervix. (The opening to the uterus) While the mediation may help ease some discomfort, you will still experience cramping and pressure during the procedure. With the local anesthesia, the pain tolerance may vary depending on the patient. Some patients feel mild discomfort while others can feel intense cramping and pain. You will need to spend 45 minutes in the recovery room for observation, rest, and discharge instructions. You are able to drive yourself with this procedure if need be.
